Two nominees for Youth Olympic Games 2010 proved their prowess on the mat when they came out victorious in the National Schools' Judo Championship.
Puteri Erna Natasha from Assumption English School and Joel Tseng from St. Gabriel’s Secondary School were put to the test at the recently concluded National Schools’ Individual Judo championship from March 24 to March 26.
Pitted against traditional judo powerhouses from Nanyang and Raffles Girl’s Secondary School, and Hwa Chong and Raffles Institution, both Natasha and Joel dispatched their opponents with flair and finesse, validating WFS’s high performance Coach Chung’s choice for Singapore’s wrestling representatives at YOG 2010.
At only 15 years old and her first participation in the “B” division (Under 17 years) lightweight category, Natasha efficiently eliminated all her opponents including 2008’s lightweight champion demonstrating superior techniques and skill to take the gold medal.
Joel Tseng competed in the “C” division boy’s extra lightweight category where he clearly outclassed all his opponents, dispatching them in a clinical fashion.
While judo differs slightly with regard to attire and regulations, the very nature is similar to that of wrestling and provides a good indication of the athlete’s abilities.
WFS is committed to channeling its limited resources to develop these fine young athletes for YOG 2010 and also the national squad preparing for the coming SEA games in Laos to help them realise their goals.
